What Middle Management Actually Does
Free & open · no login required
Middle management is where strategy becomes daily performance. It connects leadership intent to teams, budgets, workflows, customers and suppliers. When it is weak, plans stay decorative and teams stay uncoordinated.
The core job A manager converts intent into coordinated execution. That means three things done well and repeatedly:
- Translating goals into clear, sequenced work
- Coordinating people, resources and dependencies
- Holding a standard — following through until the result is real
Why experience alone is not enough Doing a job well is not the same as managing it. Management adds the discipline of frameworks, judgement under constraint, and accountability for outcomes you do not personally produce.
